DESIGN FOR INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENT
It may be necessary to start with a catalytic prototype project that brings people to the beach and people to the design process. It offers a way to start immediately to build momentum, solicit community feedback, and fundraise. Structure the design to allow for standalone projects that offer real benefit on their own while also fitting into a future comprehensive vision.
EQUITABLE AND UNIVERSAL IN DESIGN
Creating public places for users of diverse backgrounds is more than offering stereotypical program features. People are people. Everyone likes well designed and maintained places and access to nature and beauty. But at the same time, we are all different. In cultural background, leisure preferences, and physical abilities. Design spaces and to accommodate varied specific games and activities and also places full of ambiguity and flexibility. Circulation routes should be universal while offering graduated challenges.
REGENERATE SYSTEMS AND FOSTER RESILIANCY
The lake experiences pollution and excessive algal blooms because it has been separated from the natural systems that sustain it. Those systems must be regenerated. Remove paving, lawn, and manicured maintenance approaches. Plant for resilient ecosystems with communities of mutualistic relationships and allow for full life cycle in place. Plant and shape the land for infiltration, with the goal of zero surface rainwater runoff entering the lake directly.
